In 1621, the Plymouth colonist and the Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of Thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn't until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving day to be held each November.
A big roasted and stuffed bird is the main event at Thanksgiving for most Americans. The feast shared by the Pilgrims and the Native Americans consisted of venison, various wild fowl and seafood, along with grains and vegetables of the harvest. While wild turkey was likely among the wild fowl it was not the focus of the meal. So how did this tradition come to be? It is speculated that a large amount of wild turkey wandering in the colonial America made the bird a popular choice for subsequent harvest feast.
A lot of people say that football is a huge part of Thanksgiving for most Americans. Whether its seeing the local rivals square off on the High School field on Thanksgiving morning, the NFL game in the afternoon or both, watching football is an essential part of the day's festivities for millions of people. The tradition began in 1934, with a game between the Lions and the Bears in Detroit, although there were games played on Thanksgiving as early as 1902. The first televised Thanksgiving game aired in 1956, prior to this, game were broadcast on radio.
Thanksgiving isn't just about food and watching football it is mostly about giving thanks for what you have and appreciating everything and everyone close to you. I love Thanksgiving because I love spending time with my family that i haven't seen in a while.I personally can't wait for thanks giving because it is the one day a year that everyone is mostly nice to each-other and appreciates one another.
